I don't think Stanford needs to worry about losing ground to ASU in academics or research output. Just saying. And thanks JC for the convo with Dave Heeke. I interacted with him and the late Jim Bartko a bit years ago when they were working for the Duck Athletic Fund in Portland. He's a really, really good dude IMO. And Jim Bartko, you know the story. Also a really good dude. May he rest in peace.
I know the Sun State people. We pitched them to purchase my rental equipment company in NYC. We sold it in 2019 to a private equity company in Toronto. Lots of other sports lore in Rental, like Arpielle a small business in Queens getting Mets advertising because one of his big companies couldn't pay him so he took over their advertising. The owner when he worked for my partners dad in the 80s and 90s was tried to call out sick because he was at the 1986 World Series win. No doubt he was not able to work the next day, but it was hard for him to come up with a good lie, because he was on on the front cover of the Daily News celebrating with other fans! My company did some advertising with the Mets but mainly the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Rockland Boulders, minor league teams.
Excellent "notes" column, John. It's just my opinion, but I think great single-subject columnists like you tend to blow off notes columns if they write them at all. Yours always have interesting information, and we all know the attention span of readers has grown smaller in recent years, so it's great if we can throw a new subject or three at them in a relatively small space.
The WNBA would do about the same as it does in the rest of the country. Portland doesn't have a lock on far left alphabet activists. It still would not be able to support itself. Until that happens, it will not be a viable investment. BTW Your writing seems to be much less political and less all about you in this format, than it was when you were employed by the Oregonian...and that's a good thing.

Thanks, John for another good read. Keep then coming.

Thank you. I use these to bring nuggets I wouldn't put anywhere else in print.
