When I was 12, my mom got a pair of Nike running shoes. They had waffle-iron soles. Over the years my parents turned into die-hard runners.
They subscribed to Runner’s World magazine. We participated in 5K fun runs as a family. And every time one of those unmistakable orange Nike shoe boxes showed up at our house I examined it closely.
On the side of the box, in tiny print, were two words: “Beaverton, Oregon.”
