John - One of the biggest cost to schools (specifically Athletic Departments) is paying for scholarships that are given to players. While it will vary from school to school, most provide little funding to their Athletic Departments. For example at USC (I'm an alum and know their financial structure) the Athletic Department gets zero from the school and has to pay for scholarship. There are 629 student-athletes at USC, and they receive, on average, about $30,315 in sports related student aid to attend USC - which is over $19 million a year that the USC Athletic Department has to fund. Coaches salaries a lot of the time are funded by direct donations from boosters. Several years ago the NCAA released an in-depth analysis on what was driving Athletic Department cost increases and it was overwhelmingly the steady increases in tuitions (aka scholarships).
