I get terrific questions in the weekly mailbag. But what I especially loved this week is that readers not only asked me about the recent drama involving Damian Lillard, the Pac-12, San Diego State and SMU but also wanted to know about the games and players themselves.

Hey, remember when sportswriting involved sports?

I didn’t get into this business dreaming about covering conference expansion, media-rights deals and back-channeling NBA agents. But that’s where I’m spending a significant amount of my time and energy lately.

I don’t mind. Some of the palace theater is intriguing. Still, I prefer the sports themselves and can’t wait for the games, coaches and players to become the focal point this season.
