The cowboy hat was all wrong for the Royal Ball. The rhinestone-studded boots scuffed the dance floors. The University of Texas’s $376 million athletic department budget didn’t fit the Fairy Godmother’s underdog messaging.

The No. 11-seed Longhorns?

In Cinderella’s gown?

Pffft.

Texas beat No. 3-seed Gonzaga, 74-68, on Saturday. The Zags got knocked out of the NCAA Tournament. I watched coach Mark Few’s season turn into a pumpkin at Moda Center. Afterward, he gave it to us straight.

“I think we’re all adults here in this room,” Few said, “some of these monikers we put on everybody from Cinderella to blue bloods and all that, I have a hell of a time understanding it. I mean, they make literally no sense.

“That is not a Cinderella team.”
