It reminds me of my divorce where one person is told to vacate the family home in a month. Anyone who has ever dealt with that knows that the month before they leave is horrible and then once they go you put your feet up, pour a beer, and while watching a good game you breath a tremendous sigh of relief and feel incredibly happy. That is how I feel about USC...I will hold my nose next year, wish them all the worst, and be incredibly happy when they and their stench are long gone.
My oh my.......LOL!!! How do you really feel about SoCal schools leaving?? Never want to go through a divorce as it appears there are some hard feelings with a split. Hope all better in Glenn world now.
I agree, I think a lot of readers/subscribers have the same feelings. I just had to comment as Glenn's post literally made me Laugh out Loud.... for his dislike of teams exiting. Everybody has an opinion and some are definitely funnier than others.
It reminds me of a story about Howard Cosell. After one Monday Night game, he got 400 letters. 200 saying he favored the home team too much. 200 called him out for favoring the visiting team too much. He kept both stacks of letters, identical in size, on his fireplace mantle -- a reminder not to read too much into any one letter.
Wait, you're already ready for football? I hope you mean a Super Bowl with the Bengals in it. College football never ends... the Oregonian covers every insignificant detail 24/7 365. Enough already.
I mean I am ready for College FB to resume. I love the games, man. Yeah, the NFL remains good entertainment but with the Seahawks a non-factor, the Bills out, all I have to root for now is a 49ers loss. I hate that team.
This highlights one of the huge differences between the PAC 12 and SEC. The PAC is more concerned about everyone having an equal voice, while the SEC is more concerned about how many teams it can get into the CFP. There should be no handwringing when again next December there are 5 PAC 12 teams with two losses each and ranked in the top 15, but no playoff spots.
could also base it on the results of previous year and plug in a schedule like an NCAA tournament, so that the top 3 teams get a bye from playing each other and are only scheduled against the 9 other weaker teams? (if you have a 9 game conference schedule)
This year, and most, this would eliminate several of the conferences' best and most anticipated games, and sometimes it would include an always highly anticipated rivalry game. TV (and advertisers and vendors and ADs and ticket buyers) would hate it. It would do more harm than good, AND deprive teams of chances for resume wins (even though someone is going to lose that resume win opportunity).
Another method? Use a matrix like the Superbowl final score betting pool. Use number matchups...(accounting for schedule Non Conf games somehow.) then everyone gets together and draws a number out of a hat, then you fill in the matrix grid with the teams matching the numbers? Would be the fairest.
Well, I really don't think that USC is making the Championship game next year, especially keeping their D coordinator around. So that extra week will just give them more time to cry themselves to sleep on their huge pillow.
I gotta say John, your writing is unique and refreshing. What other sports writer weaves in thier bbq episode, Margaret Thatcher AND Mark Twain into an article about conference scheduling?!?! Take something mundane and make it engaging. Keep it up John. We all see how much fun you're having.
John, you always have a great and relevant quote or two ready to go. Either you are a literary genius with photographic memory or you have a copy of "The Big Book of Quotes: Funny, Inspirational and Motivational Quotes on Life, Love and Much Else" nearby. So which is it?
You can't please all the people all of the time but you can please some of the people some of the time.
The schedule seems to be balanced as best as can be with everyone having something to be happy about and something to gripe about; thank you Maggie Hatcher.
The B12 schedule is not out. How do you fit in 4 new members when 2 existing members are ready to exit? That's 14 votes to be counted. How much do the OK and TX votes count? Is there a completely done B12 deal as of today? Could be an opportunity in the central time zone for the Pac-10?
Gotta hand it to you John C... that lede got me reading you take on one of the least interesting topics in sport... second to watching the paint dry as draft picks are selected. So I tuned in to make a smart assed comment only to see some great interest among readers here. 😎 Decided to write the comment anyway. 👍

Baloney, Glenn, you won't be at all happy when USC is gone. For one, you'll lose at least half your subject material for comments here.
I'm sort of with Glenn, feel the same about UCLA. What a screwed up world the NCAA lives in. Sort of could care less.
Gosh, do you ever remember the old saying..."the only thing everyone can ever agree on in the Pac-12 (10 or even 8) is that we all hate SC."
Well, we could always admit FresNose State for a few laughs :)

I think Glenn speaks for a lot of us in here. He shared his feelings about it.

Well said
Howard and Dandy Don were the best.
Love this (and all) Cosell stories!
If everyone can say they got something they liked, and no one can say they got everything they wanted, then you probably did a fair job.
Amen
I think Margaret Thatcher was right...
Herding cats is never easy. I'm ready for some football.

The retired English teacher appreciates the Huck Finn reference. A schedule normally is just a schedule.
Thank you. — signed English lit major
Greatest American novel of all time? It has to be right up there amongst the best works ever.
Wow - really? C'mon now. Not another GOAT debate, but in literature. 😎

Nailed it

I wonder just how much input the head coaches have behind the scenes?

A schedule is just that; the “good or bad” is irrelevant - it’s what you do with the cards you’re dealt that determines the good or bad.
As much as I wasn’t a fan of Al Davis, he said it succinctly and appropriately; “Just win, baby”
GO DAWGS

USC should ever deserve corn dogs - I'll send some when they play Nebraska and Iowa.
