Next the boosters will be prowling the HS looking for the next big player they can buy. Then attending youth all state games. I know they have been sniffing around the 7 on 7 tourneys.

Parents will get even worse at youth games because they think their kid will miss out on a big offer.

We already have to have meetings with parents about behavior in the stands. There have been discussions about no parents in the stands during games because we can’t get anyone to ref games because of them. Ugh

Attendance at Husky "Spring games" has rarely been robust. Sure, there was some buzz when Sark got hired and later with CP, but overall the Spring game has not moved the needle with generally apathetic Dawg fans. We couldn't consistently fill Husky Stadium even during the CP years. Like most, I am optimistic that KB will restore the Dawgs to PAC-12 relevance, but it will take some time.

You're dead right about bad agent advice; in fact, you probably didn't go far enough. Declaring for the draft early, jumping into the transfer portal, and all the NIL hoopla tells me that Coach Lanning and all of his counterparts had better get cracking to provide realistic, helpful information to college players before more careers and lives are ruined. The monetization of college (and high school) athletics needs to be controlled sooner than later.

Let me echo the feedback you got from Coach Lanning; yesterday's post turned me from a freeloader into a paid subscriber. Keep up the great work. 👍

Clearly you’re right about a general lack of buzz around UW football this offseason. But it’s worth noting that the school did almost nothing to promote the spring scrimmage this year. I’m an alum, and was actually looking for info and coverage, but there was very little. Seems like they’re trying not to over-hype things as DeBoer and his staff are still sorting through the pieces in Seattle. If it’s this quiet next year at this time, I’ll be more concerned.

All of those worst-case scenarios for what athletes might do/get because of current NIL rules are things college coaches have been doing/getting for a long time. Why is it right for the coaches and not the athletes? Maybe the best answer is to take major college football and men's basketball out from beneath the college umbrella and treat them like what they really are -- professional sports.

Is NIL really widening the gap between haves and have nots? This isn’t me framing my take as a question but legitimately asking. The haves already have everything, but when was the last time Tennessee signed the best QB in the class? It looks to me like NIL will spread the wealth around to a least a few more historical haves, which is better than them all ending up at only 4 schools.

I think the #1 thing that needs oversight is protecting players from signing bad deals. “What happens if a player signs a big deal then bolts the next year?” My guess is they don’t see a lot of that money because it would be for promoting that school. But with no oversight, they may sign a deal that gives their NIL to one collective and then locks them in without them realizing.

What time will you be at Powell’s? My wife, Holly Gillette worked at Parkrose and was there that day. God touched Keenan that day.

Also, my daughter, Leslie Gillette, now Fischer, played softball with your wife back in the day!
