Canzano: 'Hall of Shame' move on Bill Belichick front
Belichick wins again.
Bill Belichick got robbed.
The coach with 333 wins and six Super Bowl titles won’t be a first-ballot inductee in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, per reports.
Belichick said he was puzzled by the news. Tom Brady, his long-time quarterback, called it “completely ridiculous.” Patriots fans are ticked. The world is tilted. But let’s face it, a sad byproduct of this is that voters made the world’s biggest paranoid curmudgeon look right.
Belichick isn’t up against former NFL players for induction. He’s in a category that includes contributors, owners, and other coaches. There’s a backlog of worthy candidates in that group, sure.
Voters may have been focused on clearing that traffic jam up, knowing Belichick will eventually get in. But how in the world is the guy with more playoff victories than any coach in NFL history not a first-ballot shoo-in?
They’re a petty bunch, is how.
I never covered Belichick on a beat. My 1-on-1 interactions with the coach were limited to a random eBay auction transaction we had years ago when he was a defensive coordinator with the New York Jets. It was a bizarre chance encounter.
