John, sports business works the same way (in a less public venue of course). I had the privilege of working as a agent with IMG for twenty years. During that time, we represented the highest profile athletes on the planet from Bjorn Borg to Arnold Palmer, Gretzky to Derek Jeter and Joe Montana to Tiger. My highest profile client was Jeff Gordon during his heyday in NASCAR. Ten years after I left the agency gig and became a consultant, I went to visit with Jeff at the Daytona 500. A young executive saw me at the paddock by the #24 team one day and ran up and said, "Didn't you used to be somebody I know?". Broke me up. My response, "I'm still somebody kid. But nobody you know." 😎
