Canzano: Football, regret, and the firing of Jonathan Smith
The latest in a series of lessons.
Dennis Erickson left Oregon State.
Mike Riley bailed on the Beavers — twice.
By the time Jonathan Smith ditched Corvallis in late 2023, pausing to drop a pile of his team-issued gear at Goodwill, I wondered if anyone ever bothered to pay attention to the life lessons that the football gods try to teach.
Michigan State fired Smith on Sunday. He lasted only two seasons in East Lansing. His record: 9-15 and 4-14 in the Big Ten. The school owes him $33 million.
It’s like Arthur Miller wrote: “Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets.”
