Canzano: Dan Lanning says he never heard USC's band
Oregon Ducks coach goes 1-on-1.
I sat down with Oregon Ducks football coach Dan Lanning on Wednesday for a wide-ranging, exclusive interview. We talked about UO’s upcoming game against Washington, football, family traditions, Thanksgiving, the win over USC, and more.
Did you notice the pre-game notes that USC distributed to the media?
Lanning did.
The Trojans noted that it was “Duck Hunting Season” and pointed out that USC led Oregon, 11-0, when it came to national championships. Lanning used that as motivation in his pregame speech with the team.
“It was brought to me a little bit before that team meeting,” Lanning told me. “Credit to the CBS staff for pointing it out to me and letting me take a look at it.”
I asked Lanning what he thought about USC’s band, which plays incessantly during games.
Said Lanning: “I never heard their band.”

USC band is easy to tune out. They know only two tunes. It becomes drab wallpaper.
I'm a WSU Cougar Fan and I follow the Beavers. I have to admit that Dan Lanning is a phenomenal coach. I know he has resources, lots of people have resources. He flat out wins. You can have resources, but you still have to win. Hopefully Oregon State can find that hidden gem of a hire like the Ducks did. That was brilliant outside-the-box thinking. When they hired him I thought, Dan who? I'm not thinking that anymore.
