Canzano: College football must stay simple
A check-in with Mario Cristobal (and Dan Lanning).
A handful of college football coaches tried to do sports fans a favor this week by pushing for a tightened, simplified timeline for the season.
The American Football Coaches Association board is proposing a 20-week season window. They’d like to kill the conference championship games. They’d like only one bye week during the season, thank you. Expand the College Football Playoff, they say, but let’s not sit around waiting for it to get started.
Sounds great, right?
Except, then I bounced it off Miami coach Mario Cristobal on Wednesday. I figured he’d endorse it enthusiastically. Instead, Cristobal shot back, “I like the conference championship games.”
