6 In and 6 Out for Coach Smith and the Beavers. That says it all. The least churn in all the Pac-12, by far. Stability in college football programs is the key to success.
When you have few opportunities elsewhere, you are less likely to enter the portal, so you stay put. 4-5 star players from high school have transfer opportunities, that may be a factor in why Beavers aren't losing many this cycle?
If you are satisfied with mediocrity, the coaching staff is also less likely to push players into the portal?
New coaches do want to remake rosters, so Smith's tenure means no remake as long as he is happy with 26-31.
LOL! What a weak response / effort to belittle the Beavs (who finished 2022 14th in the country and will be top 20 in 2023). So you think all the teams with 30 or 40 transactions are only moving 4 and 5 star players? That makes zero sense. There are only 30-40 5 stars every year in the country and 300-500 4 stars. The Pac 12 does not have them all. Actually, most of them are in the SEC
When you have few opportunities elsewhere, you are less likely to enter the portal, so you stay put. 2-3-stars that may be a factor in why Beavers aren't losing many this cycle?
Really love college football, but I am kinda starting to not like it. Hopefully, with counseling (tailgating) there won't be a divorce in the future on my part.
Fantastic - I've been looking everywhere for something like this on the portal - thank you for the spreadsheet and story, J.C.
A couple of thoughts...first, I agree with Dickert - the second transfer period is ridiculous. It's not like the December period allows players only milliseconds to make a decision. Dickert is correct and I'm glad he expressed himself. And, no, it's not sour grapes - it's an opinion from a head coach and he makes complete sense. BTW - where's the NCAA? What a feckless organization - they look like deer caught in the headlights on the entire NIL and portal issues. No leadership whatsoever - Larry Scott would fit right in.
Finally, for a few posters who are wringing their hands - both in anxiety (Ducks fans) and outright glee at Oregon's impending doom (all other fans) - pump the brakes a little about Oregon's outbound portal numbers. Lanning is building his own team with its own identity with players he wants...not simply players he inherited. I'm not one bit worried about Oregon's outbound numbers...in fact, I think it's a huge positive - I want a head coach and staff that have a vision for their team and an identity they want to mold vs. the alternative.
The number of players harmed by an unexpected transfer is far smaller than the number of players helped by having the freedom to respond to coaching changes and other curveballs life has thrown them.
I wonder if that ends up true. I think there are some great examples of players who stayed put and evolved. But I also think it's silly that the NCAA didn't allow players to freely transfer.
Why are we fooling around with this subterfuge? Put all college players that want to move teams into a big pool and hold a draft for them.
Since this no longer has anything to do with education, lets just have each team from the ESPN or Fox League (Pac-10 can still participate on Apple TV) make a monetary offer for all the players in the draft; The reality is that these "student-athletes" (hahaha) are nothing more than employees of teams that rent the name of the school to draw fans on TV, and the few folks that can afford to go to a game whose time is now conveniently TBD for ratings purposes only.
A player can then receive a counter offer from the minor league team that currently holds his rights, and decide to stay or go based on his NIL earnings or what the "school" will pay him. This could be done whenever it is convenient for Fox and ESPN to broadcast the draft from Las Vegas, say from the new A's stadium. Gamblers could also get onto Fan Duel for some serious gambling on what team the kid will go to...works for me!
Sadly, Glenn is spot-on. The development of minor league football for the pros is nearly complete. The NIL compensation and portal opportunities for players makes them “semi-pro” at the least. Films of yester-year decrying payments to players are officially obsolete. I still worry about young players being able to handle their finances. More of these kind of issues will be fleshed out in coming years. Good luck, John!
A draft and NFL restrictions on tampering, transfers, and a salary cap (but no cap on NIL) are coming.
Once players are deemed by legislation, NLRB decision, or litigation to be employees we will see NFL-Lite. Athlete -students if the players are students at all.
Being a serious fan of Kurt Vonnegut, he wrote in his very first book, "Mother Night" that what is coming is exactly what he predicted. Absurd in 1954 but true in the near future...."and so it goes..."
Agreed they should ditch the spring portal. Some stability is vital and I don"t think bolting in spring is an option that benefits any program at any level.
I was about to hit the "like" button because your post makes complete sense...however, I saw the "Go Dawgs" salutation and held off. Are you a Huskies fan or Bulldogs (Georgia or Fresno State) fan? It makes a helluva difference to me.
So different from the 'good old days' when TEAM meant far more than ME and if you didn't start you stayed and competed as hard as could. But I recognize that any number of athletes transfer at the encouragement of their coaches. I feel sorry for portal people who enter the portal and cannot find a scholarship elsewhere.
I believe the SEC is the only remaining P5 conference that will not grant immediate eligibility to any player who enters the portal later than February 1st. If challenged in this day and age I expect a player who declares in the spring and wants to transfer from one SEC school to another would if the matter was litigated, receive a stay and ultimately prevail if the litigation was not settled.
It's all about players' rights today and I do not see the rights being reined in without an agreement between a players union and 'management.' Therein lies the rub. Who or what is 'management' and can players form a union without being 'employees?'
If players receive employee status the calculus of college sports will be significantly altered.
“So different from the 'good old days' when TEAM meant far more than ME and if you didn't start you stayed and competed as hard as could.”
Did players stay because they wanted to compete, or did they stay because they didn’t have a choice like they do now? The rules are different. I don’t think kids are.
Not spot on, but somewhat related. ESPN app had a nice story today on how happy Bo Nix is to have passed on the draft and be playing another year of college ball at Oregon. My question is, how much money is Bo collecting on the side deal this year? Anyone know? Is it enough to cover his new wife Izzy's first class airfare from Auburn (she is a senior) to Eugene (he plays QB there); or does she get dibs on Uncle Phil's Gulfstream? Anyone know anything about this "rare air" in the whole portal deal? Just askin'. Charlie
The most interesting thing about the spring portal is the potential espionage. If I were Coach Prime, I would land a transfer from every team in the Pac-12. Maybe you don't end up with any good intel, but if you do, it could make a difference in a close game.
This is an unofficial list, but wise to keep in mind a lot of the NIL stuff is arranged by an athlete's relative, friend, attorney and has nothing to do with a "booster NIL organization" associated with a particular school.
Thank you BackDoor for the link. Very interesting, sounds like it is significant as well as being all over the place, as well as being about as non-transparent as the Vatican. As I contemplate my interest in this, I ask myself "why". Probably not the "best use of my time right now", as Dr. Walter Klopfer once counselled. I do appreciate the response. Now to get ready for the Colorado spring game, ESPN, 1200 Noon here in Beaverton. But first my great granddaughter is running track at a CYO meet at St. Mary's tomorrow morning. Charlie

Dream on....
I would like to see one window in January. Move one out a little, close the other.
DONE
...nailed it.
I was walking my bulldog past Autzen Stadium and I swear it got sucked into the transfer portal. I just heard it signed with Georgia.
Funny, Paul - well played. Charlie
😂😂😂
That is FUNNY!!
Hilarious.
Really love college football, but I am kinda starting to not like it. Hopefully, with counseling (tailgating) there won't be a divorce in the future on my part.
Smith has great stability on his staff and among the players. He’s doing a great job at OSU.
Really interesting to see the schools with "culture" be less active.
Exactly. Buy-in.
Interesting, too, to see how programs that tout their star-rankings seem to be the ones swapping out 20+

The NCAA is feckless. Indeed.

“Unstuck in time”
Yes, one window and one transfer. Not one per year!
Agreed they should ditch the spring portal. Some stability is vital and I don"t think bolting in spring is an option that benefits any program at any level.
I think it's overkill.
Yup, Coach Dickert summed it up perfectly; “I think it’s ridiculous to be honest with you,”
We’re not in Kansas anymore...
GO DAWGS
I was about to hit the "like" button because your post makes complete sense...however, I saw the "Go Dawgs" salutation and held off. Are you a Huskies fan or Bulldogs (Georgia or Fresno State) fan? It makes a helluva difference to me.
Washington; Purple and Gold, through and through 💪🏼
GO DAWGS
LOL! Glad I didn't jump too quickly on that "like" button...it was a good post, but I have my standards...
Thanks, JC for a look at the portal.

Not sure your comment about Bo’s wife Izzy is correct. I believe she’s graduated from Auburn & is living full time in Oregon.
Yes. A cheerleader from Auburn he fell in love with. married and joined him in traveling west.
Julie, thanks. Hope so. Charlie
The most interesting thing about the spring portal is the potential espionage. If I were Coach Prime, I would land a transfer from every team in the Pac-12. Maybe you don't end up with any good intel, but if you do, it could make a difference in a close game.
So I went to Google - the numbers thrown around there for Bo Nix ranged from $232,000 last year to $600,00 to $2,500.000 this year. Shazam! Charlie
I will poke around.

Greetings fellow tribe members. Is it something I said? Charlie. Lively discussion, however.
