I for one am glad you call the upcoming UO vs OSU game the Civil War game. It is a term of endearment to the majority of fans on both sides. It is simply a game for bragging right in the state of Oregon…a Civil War if you will.
Does anyone remember how much standing room only tickets were for the Blazers at Memorial Coliseum? I think like $8? My friends and I would go to games in HS and get those. Then sit in some open seats after the first quarter.
There's something to be said for offering cheap tickets to get younger fans into games to build lifelong fans. Speaking of, I looked at single game tickets for the Blazers. What used to be my season tickets a few years ago, which were on average around $80 per ticket, were $240 for the Bucks or Lakers, etc. To go watch the possibly the worst team in the league! Gain fans with cheaper tickets, lose them with expensive ones (and a terrible product).
Back in 1977-80, I lived in downtown Seattle near the Seattle Center. a bunch of us would walk over to the Center and attend Sonic games for $6 a seat in the nosebleed section. And had a blast. Sadly, salaries and embracing high school kids into the league ruined it for me. I liked set plays and strategy, not slam dunk contests. And can no longer afford attending.
I lived in Portland from 1980-84 and bought season STO tix for $5 per game. What value- saw Dr J for 5 bucks. Went to 40 games per year. Loved it but of course I was 26 years old
Rooting for Cal to have a big season in the ACC…doesn’t Oregon State have any deep pocket donors to help out its athletic department? And if so, why not? SMU boosters are paying their athletic department the annual fee that it’s not being paid by the ACC this season. Where are OSU’s influential donors? In today’s college sports world, you can’t expect the state’s taxpayers to float state funded university athletic departments. It didn’t work for UO or OSU in the 70’s and 80’s, isn’t gonna work in the 2020’s. Gotta pay these days if you wanna be relevant in college sports.
OSU donors? Well, after the multi-millions bag OSU received in December from the court decision in Washington, and the $10 million the Oregon Legislature allocated to OSU athletics in March, I suspect donors are playing a bit of wait and see. It's kinda apples and pears, but donors may think it is all apples and they're hanging on to their own fruit.
Likewise donors to the UO Foundation. Unfortunately, donors to academic facilities and endeavors get little notoriety.
from 2021: "Five years after donating $500 million to the University of Oregon, Nike’s former leader Phil Knight and his wife Penny have donated an additional $500 million for the second phase of an innovative scientific research campus named in their honor."
That's on top of earlier donations to remodel/rebuild the library and the law school. And, over $200 million to Oregon Health & Science University which in many states is part of the campus of a state university instead of a separate entity.
But, what do we hear about Knight or T. Boone Pickens or Patrick Ryan or Kevin Plank or Jim Kimsey, etc? It's generally only about their donations to athletics instead of their other generosity.
The Resers gave to the Linus Pauling Science Center at OSU, and the Patricia Reser Center for Creative Arts, but we just think of them in terms of the stadium.
Some of these folks also make additional anonymous gifts. In a sense, it is unfair to the legacy of all of them.
SMU is in a major TV market and they just expanded their stadium.
I live within walking distance of SMU and the stadium. I do know that the neighborhood chat room was excited about this season- really for the first time that I can remember since the death penalty in 1986.
Interestingly, the very thing that cost SMU the death penalty is the thing that may make it a strong program again- the willingness of some alumni to pay players.
You and I are practically neighbors!!! SMU has a beautiful campus. It really is funny how life can go circle. I’m sure the money that SMU paid to players such as Eric Dickerson and a few others pales in comparison to what schools are now “legally” paying players. The “Game” has really changed over the years. I wonder how much money Eric Dickerson could have gotten in today’s NCAA. Go Ponies!!! 👍🏈
Apple Cup and my Coug brothers & sisters are still lamenting on attending it. Full of excuses but the under lying theme of them not attending is they are still pissed about the T10 abandoning ship and most specifically direct it at the Udump and it isn’t the Apple Cup anymore.
I say it’s time to move on and support your team in spite of, or better yet, because of the circumstances. Our team deserves our support as they are paving their own way. Cougs win by 10 this week.
Civil War. Glad to see a sell out and hope OSU catches fire and plays a solid game. Pickem’ for me.
2024 Apple Cup tickets are too expensive for my family. That is why I chose not to attend.
Over the years, my wife and I and children attended many of the Cougar Gridiron Classic football games in Seattle. Those ticket prices were much more reasonable.
Ticket sales appear to be coming around a bit late with what appears many Cougs holding out for lower prices. I say whatever it takes to get butts in seats. “Grumpy” sums it up perfectly.
I had SRO tickets when Utah visited the ducks. This was before they joined the PAC. Chip was coaching. Back in those days every single seat was sold for every single game. This year both home games have been SRO at Autzen. The last time they sold out a home opener was 2015.
All I can say about that experience is that it's likely only for young adults or absolute die hards. The worst seat in the house is better than standing on the rim wishing for a butt rest.
Old Pac12 is now 21-2 with only Colorado & Stanford having a loss, each to a P4 team. They are 3-0 against the mighty SEC and 5-2 against all P4 teams. Seems like it would still be the dominant conference. The Civil War & Apple cup will see the 1st time old PAC foes compete against each other. Should be fun.
I am happy to see Justin Wilcox getting some success at CAL. He's a good dude and lest we forget was one of the anchors of Oregon's 94 Rose Bowl team - and also the son of the late Dave Wilcox, 49ers great and NFL Hall of Famer. Wilcox is tougher than a barbed wire sandwich and his teams reflect that. Should Dan Lanning ever seek other employment...
John - I don't know if kids do those things anymore, but when I was at OSU in the mid-70s, we trekked down to Eugene and painted the big O on Skinner Butte orange. My dad (also a Beaver) said some of his cohorts did that in the late 30s, which is where I drew the inspiration.
Sir. Why do you keep skipping over Arizona while they are still ranked? We got a fantastic contest coming this week at Kansas State. If Arizona wins this one, not only does the winning streak continues, but we will have a statement win and proven that nobody is missing Jedd Fisch. Bear Down!
Jorge, as a UW fan I'm sorry we stole a good portion of your players. Jonah Coleman is a beast among several. That said, I hope Arizona goes far this year and Fifita and McMillan make plenty of fireworks in the B12. I will say it was always tough to win down in the desert!
I watched the Call Auburn game and Cal was big time homered by the SEC refs, Even the announcers doing the game were at a loss to explain a couple of egregious calls near the end of the game. Thankfully the Auburn qb continued to throw interceptions
Wow! CAL coverage squeezed in between the constant stories about the Beavers and Ducks! Keep it coming! ; )
ESPN has the ACC -- and the ACC has CAL and Stanford. There could have been an "ACC After Dark" broadcast on September 21 -- but some genius at the ACC decided to send both schools to the East Coast that weekend.
But if there are only two Pacific time zone schools available for these "After Dark" games the fan bases are each school will get fed up with evening games. Perhaps some cooperation between the ACC and "Pac-12" will enable the Beavers and Cougars to fill some of these evening time slots in 2025.
Does the ACC consider broadcasting time windows like this when setting football schedules? Maybe Bob Thompson can offer some insight about how conferences and networks work together on schedules.
I bought standing room seats twice. For the World Series five years ago in Boston and for the NFL opener in SoFi vs. the Bills a few years back. Great experience with friends, but my teams (Dodgers and Rams) lost both games.

Agree.
Ditto
"Spanning the Globe"... an ABC Wide World of Sports reference, John? That will blow by anyone under 50. :-)
Yep.

I’m shuddering thinking of how much Sonics tickets will cost when they return to Seattle.
My season tickets seats last year were $246 a seat, with a long-term buyer discount.
I lived in Portland from 1980-84 and bought season STO tix for $5 per game. What value- saw Dr J for 5 bucks. Went to 40 games per year. Loved it but of course I was 26 years old
I wouldn't sit court side for 8 bucks to see this current rendition of the Blaa-zers.
So read the paper the next day or go online and see highlights. That is, if you have a smart phinr

LOL!!! Love your analogy.😊👍
An OSU donor just gave $50 million to support the new supercomputer building being built on campus.
An OSU donor recently gave $25 million to support the new fine arts building on campus.
An OSU donor recently gave $50 million to support the vet school.
An OSU donor recently gave $50 million as seed money for the Reser renovation. Other donors kicked in approximately $35 million for the project.
OSU has plenty of major donors. They just give in areas other than athletics.
Likewise donors to the UO Foundation. Unfortunately, donors to academic facilities and endeavors get little notoriety.

As a pissed off Coug, my hope is we stick it to the purple puppies. Go Cougs and go Beavs.

A few days ago there was a column that the Apple Cup was 55 percent of capacity in sales. Ticket prices aren't cheap, and yes, WSU fans are grumpy.

He's already turned down the Ducks 2x but maybe the 3rd time he says yes? Doubtful.
Shouldn't Wilcox have at least one winning season first?
Twice? I knew he did after Mario left.

Not as good or as dangerous as lighting the Beaver’s tail on fire! The good old days.

I don’t think the WSU run defense is that strong. Game plan for UW seems simple: Feed Jonah.
I also see Bruener meeting Mateer from time to time and Prysock making some swats. I like the trajectory of the UW D under Belichick.
Agreed. On defense, gotta force Mateer to throw it.
I lived in Tucson for a dozen years and concur. Arizona is back on the map and hasn't missed Fisch.
…and it’s the Civil War until someone comes up with a better or catchier name. Sorry.
I watched the Call Auburn game and Cal was big time homered by the SEC refs, Even the announcers doing the game were at a loss to explain a couple of egregious calls near the end of the game. Thankfully the Auburn qb continued to throw interceptions
I saw the OSU vs USC at OSU when OJ was playing for USC. STO on the 50 yard line. Needless to say it was a fantastic watch. STO all the way.
I was there too and loved OJ in the mud! Dee Andros looked like a giant pumpkin on the side-line! Beavers won 3-0!
Wow! CAL coverage squeezed in between the constant stories about the Beavers and Ducks! Keep it coming! ; )

Bob, if you're a Duck fan, please get some of the SRO tickets for Saturday. Thanks
Good results then.
