One other point I would add - nobody's claiming Bronny is going to be anywhere near as good as his dad...might just be a very average player. Very average. It's not like the Ducks lost out on a top-flight recruit that could help them immediately.

Eugene is just not a mecca for basketball, even less so than Spokane or Madison. So why is there this giant expectation from Duck's fans that their team be so competitive in an urban sport? Sometimes, money can't buy you success, especially when all programs can now legally entice players with NIL money, not the older under-the-table Nike benefits.

Oregon State built Top 10 basketball teams with local kids. Missed on Richard Washington (UCLA) but kept many others like AC Green, Mark Radford, Ray Blume and Charlie Sitton. Beaver Baseball keeps the Oregon kids home that can play at the top level (Adley Rutschman, Trevor Larnach). Model for all Beaver and Duck teams.

Dude, stop living in the past! that was 40 years ago. Ralph Miller's been dead & gone for 22 years, yet you're still bringing up ghosts of the past. Sitton, radford, Blume are all around 60 years old now...but you just can't help yourself.

The game of college basketball has changed tremendously since they played & the chain smoker coached.

Beaver Baseball has been going strong for 50 years and is still cranking out Major Leaguers. The talent is still in Oregon / the Northwest, but the program has to appeal to that talent. The Ducks, because of Nike, has not had as tough a time as OSU hanging on to locals. But you aren't going to build a national champion at Oregon based on recruiting LA when UCLA, USC, Pepperdine and the Arizona schools are much closer / more urban

But a heck of a lot of success vs SC on the football field especially over the last decade. How many conference titles and playoff appearances has USC won and made?

If you are correct, why isn't SC dominant in football and basketball?

Bear Alexander, Addison, Williams, and Singer aren't getting paid? Come on Man!

I suppose boosters didn't come up with the money for Riley.

SC went on the cheap after Carroll left. The Trojans are headed to the B1G not because of on-field and on-court success but because of geography.

Have you ever heard of trust funds? You should have. Lots of students in south central are trust fund babies. When Phil passes, the well is not going to dry up. And it costs $500K to join Oregon's NIL collective, Division Street. (looked at by the NCAA with the NCAA taking no action against Division Street.)

Your superior attitude is simply shocking.

the story is here.

It was the news that rocked the college basketball world. Phil Knight, co-founder and former chairman of Nike, had walked on to the Oregon Ducks basketball team and earned the starting point guard position. At 83 years old, Knight was the oldest player in NCAA history, and many were skeptical about whether he could keep up with the young, talented athletes on the court.

But Knight was determined, and he quickly proved his doubters wrong. He had been a standout player in his youth and had never lost his love for the game. With his sharp mind and years of experience in athletics, he was able to read the court better than anyone else and anticipate his opponents' moves with ease. He was also a natural leader, inspiring his teammates with his unwavering work ethic and unrelenting determination.

As the season progressed, Knight and the Ducks continued to exceed expectations. They worked tirelessly in practice, and Knight's dedication and commitment inspired the entire team. They won game after game, and soon found themselves in the NCAA tournament. Their opponents scoffed at the idea of a senior citizen leading a college basketball team, but Knight remained unfazed. He had faced down naysayers throughout his career, and he was not about to let them get in the way of his dreams.

As the tournament progressed, Knight's skills on the court continued to impress. He dribbled circles around his opponents, weaving in and out of defenders with ease. His passes were crisp and precise, and his shooting was deadly accurate. The other teams couldn't keep up, and soon the Oregon Ducks were headed to the national championship game.

The entire state was abuzz with excitement, but no one was more thrilled than 86-year-old Gladys Johnson. She had been an avid Oregon Ducks fan for decades, but had grown increasingly frustrated over the years with conservative radio personality Lars Larson's commentary on the team. Larson was known for his controversial and often inflammatory remarks, and Johnson had found his rhetoric increasingly offensive as she aged.

But now, with Knight leading the team to the brink of a national championship, Johnson was elated. She had always been proud of her state's athletic achievements, but now she felt a new sense of hope and possibility. She knew that Knight was not just playing for the Ducks, but for the entire state of Oregon. He was showing that age was just a number, and that anything was possible with hard work and determination.

In the end, Knight and the Ducks faced off against a tough opponent in the championship game. It was a hard-fought battle, but in the end, Knight's leadership and skill on the court proved to be the deciding factor. With a final score of 76-71, the Oregon Ducks were national champions.

As the team hoisted the championship trophy high into the air, Gladys Johnson watched with tears in her eyes. She knew that Larson would be grumbling on the radio the next day, but she didn't care. She was grateful for Knight, for his unwavering commitment to the game of basketball, and for the hope and inspiration he had brought to her and so many others.

Because Oregon under Altman had a great 11-12 year run that's why...not just one season or two. putting back to back to back to back very good seasons up raises expectations...which is the whole point. build up a loyal fan base, build up their expectations, and you have a winning program.

After watching Bronny in two Les Schwab Invitational games this year, it was very plain to see that he is a very good, but not great high school player. Both top West Linn players [Jackson Shelstad & Adrian Mosley] are better players at this point in their careers. Who has the best upside? That remains to be seen. But as far as a player, I don't think the Ducks "lost out" in this situation.

The media circus that arrived with Bronny's film crew appeared to be intrusive for the Sierra Canyon team. Ducks BB has had enough of a circus with how the last 2 years have ended and probably wouldn't do well with the additional scrutiny.

Nobody disputes that Dana Altman has demonstrated that he is generally a good coach. But my concern centers around his & his coaching staff's recent talent evaluations. They were the ones that chose, offered & recruited the "Unnamed Player" who didn't want to work hard & ended up transferring via the portal. They have made the player choices that have fielded the last several years' teams. Honestly, since Tony Stubblefield left for DePaul, the Ducks' coaching staff seems to be finding more "misses" than "hits". And the old Canadian pipeline seems to have dried up.

Given the resources that Altman has to work with at the UO, I really believe this year should be considered a "make or break" year for Altman & his coaching staff. One bad year's an outlier; two bad years are a trend; and three bad years are...well...unacceptable.

P.S. My post bears absolutely no "hate" towards Bronny & his choice. I HOPE he does well at USC and I am GLAD that he will have his family & support group there to help him. Nothing but best wishes for Bronny & his future!

Coach Altman made his point after the season, and to me made it clear he wanted players who play basketball. And fans in the stands to support their efforts. These are reasonable goals. The rest, including the James saga, is show and distraction. He has some good recruited players coming in. If they play with passion and desire, there are enough UO fans to fill the stands without the side show.

Expand full comment

I may be in the minority here but i'm glad he's going to USC and not Oregon...I just don't think it would have been a good fit as Altman has old time values and he's not into the circus world of Basketball (as yet anyway)..I saw Bronny play 2 games this past winter in the les schwab tourney and he was outplayed by several players participating that week including the kid from West Linn..He may eventually end up a star player but he's not there yet.

John, DA has a valid point. Many players want the stardom and fame, but don’t want to put in the work to achieve it. So sad.

Expand full comment

I agree with your assessment. Coach needs players committed to excellence and that means a willingness to put in the time and effort to be the best they can be. They don’t have to be the “best” players coming out of high school but they have to have the passion and determination to continually improve their skills and game. Good luck to Coach Altman and the Ducks in the upcoming season!

I 100% agree with ya John. I think we could have all predicted this decision. I wish Bronny well but I'm happy for Oregon and Dana's program not to have to deal with the circus that would have come with it. Thanks for the great column.

Spot on assessment JC. Bronny appears to be a decent kid but he carries a boat load of baggage being LeBron's son. It would have been a situation of too-much-for-a-nickle, not-enough-for-a-dime had Bronny chosen Oregon. Altman dioesn't need that; at the very least it would not fit the culture he knows works best and is trying to resurect.

I had to chuckle at that column...Dana Altman was NOT going to double down on the issues that have plagued the last 2 teams. Transfer portal players with me me me attitudes. THAT would've most certainly accompanied signing La China's son. Dana's an excellent coach, but sometimes it just doesn't matter because a player is so stuck in their own little world they're uncoachable.

“This is the first one out of the James gang to go to college,” LeBron said. “Obviously, his dad didn’t go to school. His mom didn’t go to college.

Translation: I proud my son picked a minor league "one and done school" to play one year for, especially one where sports corruption rules the day, since I will push the Lakers to draft him in a year so I can fulfill my last fantasy of playing with son in the NBA. As far as actual education, well who needs that, why just look at me, and since Bronny is going to the U of Spoiled Children he can just take a couple of "wink, wink" classes, join a frat and party for a year...works for me!

Man….some of you people are bitter. By all accounts he’s a very good kid, humble and grounded. His dad was raised in poverty by a single mom and used basketball to not only establish a better life for himself but to use his position to provide opportunities for his kid. His son picked the hometown school—and to the point of this article if you want to compare it to Oregon- a school that is MUCH higher rated and respected academically, MUCH more diverse, and in a cosmopolitan city with plenty of exposure to endless opportunities and where he won’t live in nearly the fishbowl he would anywhere else. Probably Natalia Bryant used many of the same checked boxes to inform her decision to enroll @ SC. Basketball wise he picked the program that just made the ncaa tournament not the one who didn’t so there’s that too. I get it: the envy, hate, insecurity with Southern California runs deep in the provencial echo chamber that is the pacific nw but try being a bit objective on this one. The kid made the right call.

Whew!!! Altman thankfully dodged a bullet. From what I see/read Dana Altman a pretty good guy and a very decent coach. Dan Lanning has done well by bringing back former players and building community and comradery from that vantage point. Doing so makes Eugene the "Hometown" that everyone wants to be part of It would serve Altman well to do the same. Pritchard is current and the kind of kid/player that makes communities "bind" and enthusiasm rise. Unfortunately, Brooks has some public persona issues at the moment be he too has the work ethic. Bring back the entire team that made Sweet/Elite and build from there. Make it an event that garners "National Headlines" Marketing campaigns to the world is also what recruits are looking for. So how about some "glam" like "Knight court, where "OP" (Opponent Pate) is Made". Thanks for the article
