Bo Nix led Oregon to a 45-6 win in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Austin Novosad era of Oregon Ducks football began with a little more than nine minutes left in Monday’s Fiesta Bowl and UO trouncing Liberty 45-6.

Bo Nix had 363 passing yards and five touchdown passes in Monday’s game. He broke a handful of school and NCAA records. Before leaving college for good, he asked to take one final college snap.

He should have bowed.

Instead, Nix handed the ball to running back Bucky Irving, who bolted off the right side of the offensive line for a gain of seven yards. Then, Novosad ran on the field, prompting Nix to slap backs with his teammates and leave college for good.

Oregon blasted Liberty on Monday. Don’t blame the Flames. They were invited guests. None of what happened, including droves of empty seats in Glendale Stadium, was their fault. But the Ducks (12-2) did what they should have done and ran a 13-0 Conference USA champion off the field.

After the opening quarter, there was a methodical, inevitable, procedural feel about the outcome. The only drama centered around how much Nix might accomplish and how long he’d stay in the game.

Amid that, on Monday I wondered if Oregon’s quarterback might have set an unbreakable record.

One that flew under the radar.
