I’m fascinated by Bill Belichick’s decision to try something new at age 72. Seeing him introduced as the head football coach at North Carolina sure was something. It sparked a memory of a bizarre interaction I had with Belichick years ago.
I collected sports cards as a kid. I still have them. I was going through boxes years ago, trying to figure out what to get rid of, when I found a stack of 1958 Topps football cards. There weren’t any major stars. The cards were worth a few dollars each. So I listed the stack as a bulk lot on eBay.
Winning bid: $58.
The high bidder emailed me immediately after the auction, asking about shipping. He wanted the cards sent to an address that wasn’t his home, as he was working remotely for several weeks. He also inquired whether I’d accept a personal check for payment.
The auction winner: Bill Belichick.
