I received a note from a curious reader on Thursday who asked a question we should all face once in a while. He wrote: “You really want to be in the middle of that pile of horse manure?”
Federal prosecutors secured indictments against 26 people accused of rigging college basketball games, according to court papers unsealed Thursday. The US Attorney says the alleged criminals “engaged in a point-shaving scheme involving more than 39 players on more than 17 different NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams.”
The charges include bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and aiding and abetting. It undermines the integrity of the game. It sucks. And as I write that sentence, I realize even the legal sports-wagering entities are causing serious grief for law-abiding citizens.
