Does anyone else tire of the constant chatter from play by play and color guys? It's as if they get paid to fill every moment with worthless chatter. Less is more.

I really do hate it -- it's one reason I don't get the Romo infatuation

He's constantly blabbing

Like...just SHUT UP Tony

Expand full comment

It’s up to the producer to reign in the on air talent. Sitting down and reviewing a broadcast after it’s over is the best way for these blabber mouths to realize they are just that. Even at the “professional level”, they need to experience how fatiguing they can make a game to watch

GO DAWGS

Fatiguing is a perfect way to put it

It also robs the viewers of taking in much of the atmosphere when constantly bombarded by commentary

John, thanks for your commentary on the TV gods dictating what is on the screen. You really hit a sore spot with me. Why don’t they understand that less is more? Playing a pre-recorded interview with the coach with the game running on the split screen is another irritation. We don’t spend all this money on large screens so they can be cluttered with all the tickers, corners eaten with score updates and the rest. Again, less is more. Fill the screen with the game, not clutter.

I get why they do it -- they don't want us to change the channel. But it's annoying. We have the ability to watch what we'd like to see.

Having spent 30 years doing customer research - a fair amount of it on some of the talking heads & shows you know - media doesn’t get better ratings by this clutter approach. Just like the DJ that can’t stop talking, talent always wants more exposure, more face-time, more words. The viewer objects and tunes out. We want to see the show or game…content. Clutter is counterproductive and creates churn.

I felt this way on June 17, 1994 when NBC decided I didn't want to watch Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Rockets and Knicks. What I really wanted to watch is an aerial shot of Al Cowlings driving O.J. Simpson around in a white Ford Bronco. I kept thinking, flash a banner at the bottom of the screen, and for those that want to watch, they will change the channel. Personally, I found the battle at center of Ewing vs. Olajuwon a bit more compelling.

100% agree John

I found it really annoying to have MLB "live look ins" on the Judge at bats forced upon me.

If I want to watch that, I know where to find it.

Just assuming "you are watching NCAA FB .... surely you must REALLY care about MLB home run chase" is totally incorrect on the networks part

Judge hitting 61 HRs is amazing... but it's the seventh-most all time. I wonder how much of this has to do with the New York market.

We had the same problem with our remote until I down loaded a free app from the Play Store/Apple that makes your phone a remote...works great.

I think Oregon covers... Furd is down 3 starters, 2 O-linemen and a RB.

May I happily say that I not only agree with every thing you said John, but pretty much everything that the "tribe" commented. Babble, Babble, Babble seems to have infected the commentary on every sport we watch. I agree with (the other) grumpy old man's observation. I am with him and Mike Wilbon: " JUST SHUT UP!

Stanford's defense is not what it's been, the offense is missing key pieces Ducks 38-24

I think it's the Huskies first away game, even if it's in a very neutral environment. Chip has a few wrinkles he hasn't shown yet. UCLA by 33-31

WSU is frustrated after losing to the Ducks. Cal's defense isn't as good as normal and they do a decent job stopping the run. WSU 38-24

USC kills ASU...45- 13

Beavers have a hangover Utah 31-16

Arizona struggles for awhile then romps second half 45-10

Bad news. It sounds like ESPN isn't getting the message, as they plan to cut in to Judge's ABs during football games again this Saturday if he's still sitting on 61. (link: https://twitter.com/AndrewMarchand/status/1575535448767840256)

Someone tell the folks in Bristol it's 2022, and anyone who cares about the HR mark is already watching the Yankees game. Kentucky at Ole Miss on ESPN at noon ET is a pretty big game. I'll bet you'd be hard pressed to find fans of either team that need to see a guy hit a home run live that badly.

Wouldn't it be great if we had something like a smartphone, where we could watch one channel while we had some other channel showing on our TV? Or maybe a social media outlet where you could watch a replay of an event just seconds after it happens? Maybe someday.

Lot of people could careless about Kentucky/Mississippi game. There are are baseball fans in your readership. Also Kentucky/Mississippi will play next year. Home run record might not be in jeopardy.

I don't know if finances will allow GK to leave some money on the table in exchange for more schedule control, but I hope it's being considered.

This last decade plus under the P12 deal, with such unknowns on game times and short advance notice on game times and so...many...night games..

...it's all really degraded in person fan bases across the conference.

I’m listening to your podcast about Guinness records. Anna’s preferred record reminds me of when my husband and I were teaching English in Yichang, China in 1992. Our translator brought us to a high end restaurant and there were chickens walking around, sometimes walking past our table. Our translator told us to pick out the one we wanted for dinner. In a few minutes, the cooked feet were brought to us, looking pretty much the same as they did walking by!

Lots of UW skeptics

To me they look wholly different with fresh new organized and experienced coaching

I see their receivers running wide open and all over the Rose Bowl for a 10+ point win

I have the same opinion for the OSU-Utah game as I did after the USC game. For the Beavs to win, Chance Nolan AND the OC must have a near-perfect game. That means don't call plays for long, down-field throws. Nolan does not have the accuracy to thread the needle if the receiver is covered. The offense was successful against USC, completing mid-range throws down the field.

OSU 27, Utah 24

Oregon will win but it will be closer than the spread...I have the beavers winning in OT...they are hungry very hungry this year. Cal, I believe will win since the Cougs will press too much, meaning they are so upset from last week's loss they make stupid mistakes (penalty's at the wrong times), USC will come out and wreak destruction, they want to prove the OSU game was a fluke, Riley will have them fired up...UCLA hasn't shown me much in terms of anything, they're winning yes, but they are so blah, which surprises me with a Chip Kelley team...Thanks John for all your incite and stating cold hard facts about teams in your articles or the TV show...Glad you are doing well...Good luck...oh maybe get two more remotes and have strings attached to them and attached to the end tables...worked for me until the dogs got ahold of the remote...

Why is everyone excited about WSU. Beat Wisconsin who is terrible. Ohio State beat Wisconsin 52-14. WSU is average. Oregon win over WSU not real impressive.
