Attorneys enter Whitman County Courthouse on Monday. (Photo: Geoff Crimmins)

Judge Gary Libey got it right on Monday. If Whitman County Superior Court left the business of the Pac-12 Conference to a dozen divided schools it wouldn’t be difficult to predict how things might go.

“Ten against two,” he said, “how does that turn out?”

The folksy judge started the complaint proceedings by making reference to the funnel cake he and his wife ate at the fairgrounds over the weekend. He ended it by granting Oregon State and Washington State a temporary restraining order — essentially informing 10 departing members they can eat funnel cake… but not have it, too.

The courtroom featured all sorts of interested parties, including Washington State president Kirk Schulz and athletic director Pat Chun. The hearing was broadcast publicly via Zoom. It finished with a spirited chorus of “Go Beavs!!” and “Go Cougs!!” cries from viewers who unmuted themselves before the court could end the broadcast.
